Return to the Ocean explores the shifting relationship between place, memory and the idea of home. Developed in Weihai, the coastal city where I grew up, the project emerged from my experience of moving between different cities and environments, and from the sense of déjà vu that certain colours, forms and landscapes can unexpectedly evoke.
A group of sculptural objects was placed within the intertidal landscape, temporarily occupying the space between land and sea. Their unfamiliar forms appear both displaced and strangely at home, creating an imagined landscape within an existing one. Through this encounter, the work considers how a sense of belonging can be constructed through memory, association and our changing relationship with place.
